The news changes every day —Should our views change too? The latest comment is at the top of the page.

9. Governor Rick Perry of Texas has come up to the Lead for now in the Republican Presidential race. The Tea Party is doing a lot for him . The Tea party is almost universally hated and feared by everyone but the middle class Working stiff , the folks that do not want or expect a free ride , which would exclude a lot of Church folks too.

8. And now , another noteworthy EBay buy . We have just purchased a 1968 copy of the Canadian  ”Free Press Weekly” ,a long extinct Farm paper . Unlike the venerable Canadian ‘Family Herald ‘ which folks saved , the ‘Free press weekly’ was usually tossed after reading , and this is the only copy I have ever seen available in recent years. At that age ,that may have been about our only connection to the World’s events ,This issue has a photo and story about Apollo 8 and it’s crew  on the front page ……the $8 included shipping .      Aug 24—11

7. Sir Richard branson’s Necker Island mansions burned to the ground yesterday . Go see it online and all the photos too . He is the guy that owns Virgin Airlines and all that stuff. Sure wonder what Insurance he had and all .

Burt Reynolds ‘ Mansion in Florida is in foreclosure after he made no mortgage payments on it for a year , over a million bucks worth . One thing going for the insurance folks , they can test for accelerants (gas etc) days or even weeks after a fire happens .

6. South Carolina National bank was one of the oldest, most respected banks in the Southeast , even surviving the US civil War of the 1860′s . It merged with Wachovia Bank in 1991 with the names changed over in 1994 . Part of the deal was that the account numbers stayed the same and one could use the old SCN deposit slips and checks till they ran out .

Yeah , it just so happened we had just received an order of the SCN checks for our special account just before the name change back in 1994 and every now and then we happily, even today spring them on an unsuspecting uppity-nosed  teller . They usually have to ask the supervisor , who assures the dumbfounded teller that “yes ,SCN is us”‘.

We guess we paid good $$$ for these blank checks ,and it is not us that keeps changing names.

Now ,in 2011 , Wachovia Bank has been swallowed up by the great Wells Fargo Bank , but they assure us that we can still use any leftover checks & deposit slips from as far back as the account numbers are the same ,no matter what the outdated but merged bank name says…Live on ,SCN . Aug 20-11

5.We just got word tonight of the death of 80 years old Andrew (Andy) Overholt of Sarasota Fl . About 30+ years ago I had the privilege of traveling with him to far off places . They say you really get to know someone well if you travel or Camp with them . Andy was about the nicest , Interesting and informed person one could ever hope to deal with . R.I. P .

He was also one of those rare folks who seem to make a  good living without trying  too hard or much . My Grandpa John L Yoder was like that too , and I have an Uncle or two that managed it that way also. Not me , with a nose to the grindstone , it seems  .  Aug 18–11

4.The City of Abbeville SC recently condemned a very old all brick house , and ordered it torn down . I dated it about 1870 . The owners had made a valiant attempt at ‘remodelling ‘ it , but failed to keep ahead of the red sticker on the door . I happened by the night before the scheduled ‘execution’ of the house . The poor owners were scurrying about , hauling stuff out as best they could. When I enquired about buying things , I got immediate preference over their friends who appeared to be stripping out the wiring and carrying stuff out that we would not have touched, for free. The last time the house was occupied was about 30 years ago .

We ended up with a pickup load for about $30 , including 2 nice trunks , one still full of old letters from the 50′s , 3 old oil lamps , 3 chairs , several boxes of packed dishes ,a half dozen old cigar boxes, several ancient hanging wall mirrors, and several old leather suitcases . The great granddaughter of the long deceased occupants even  threw in a few freebies as we closed the last deal by flashlight.

It is a shame , the original all brick part of the house could have been saved .

P.S> A day later , nothing put a pall of dust , a large pile of brick , a shattered pile of wood remains to be loaded .

Do pay your property taxes on time , and do mow the grass and keep up at least the outside off the houses to prevent this type of thing from happening . Historic means nothing against a dozer.

3. We watched the repubs’  so called debate (on Fox on-line).  The 2 Minnesotans went at it , with the Woman skewering the Pawlenty Guy to where he quit the race the next day . Ah ,it is heating up to a good run . We still say if Pres. Obama brings the gas prices way down he can easy win it .Aug.16-11

2. All this debt talk and the downgrading of the USA credit rating . How will this affect us in the pocketbook ? We do not know , as we haven’t kept up with it that well , but it cannot be good if the rest of the world gangs up on the USA money-wise and lending wise. Why is the whole world lending the richest country in the world money , anyway ? Dave Ramsey and his type of thinkers may be about right just now about debts in general. Just say no to it..  Aug. 06–11

The banks are on the verge of charging customers a fee to keep their $$$$ safe . That is not a good sign at all .

1.. Stamp collecting as a hobby in the USA has virtually collapsed , you can buy mint stamps that are 40-50 years old for less then face value , and use them . Though it takes a number to add up to today’s postage .

Old , and not so old Chinese stamps is where the action is now . Chinese Missionary’s friends from long ago are looking through their closets looking for canceled Chinese stamps on envelopes . There weren’t that many made or used back then . These bring hundreds , sometimes thousands of dollars….It’s a bubble . even if China is the World”s emerging power now. Aug 06–11

June -July 2011 — news and Views .

July 4th, 2011

Items that may affect the Plain World  , at least our take on it today .

———————————————————————————————

15 Housing prices in Ft Myers Fl. , and around but not in Pine craft , Fl continue to collapse at an amazing rate . You can get houses for less then 60K and condos for less then 30K , and in Ft Myers that is a block or 2 from the beach . And these are in fairly decent settings . That according to a recent traveler there. Taxes there are high though , from 2K on up for non-residents, is it time to buy or will it sink more next year ?

14. We are with Duke energy , and for our costs pay about $92. for every thousand KWZ used . that is by far the cheapest in this area . All the Co-ops are getting up to $145. for that same  amount . Aug 03-11

13. A swimming pool is a must at some point in most families’ journey. We’ve had a 27 ft. above ground one for over a decade now. The whole key is how to keep it relatively clear , and who maintains it ? Pops does , of course.

We are on our 2nd liner and motor , and have tried almost any imaginable way to keep the water stable . We have the best luck by using a half pound of super-shock every day in the hot weather . One can buy super-shock on-line for about $2 a pound. 68%.

Add baking soda every week for clearness, and a gallon or two of bleach added always at dusk , will cut down on the cloroxy  smell of  it . In milder heat we cut out the Super-shock a day or two for a more natural feel . If you have a center drain , use that to flush out the debris , or get a good skimmer , and use it a lot , as the trash always collects in the center. We run the pump less then half an hour a day .

The reason public pools have so much chemical , is because so many trashy folks go to the bathroom in it . So educate , and provide a potty close by .

And if Dad does all the work , does he swim in it often?  Not yet this season .   July27-11

12. One of the most misused ,overrated , popular  products in the world has to be the can of WD40 setting on your shelf. Just talk to your local locksmith , or clock repair person about the damage the product can and will do .They all go ballistic on it .

Actually , WD40 was designed to help keep dry the huge minuteman missiles that used to set far underground a generation ago ,poised and  ready to destroy the Soviet Union at 10 minutes notice . Fortunately , they were never used.

If you need lubricant for your tools , get a can of silicone spray , that is what that is for .

11.How to survive the  Heat wave of July-11 . You all up there in the mid-country , learn how to handle this heat , we always have , about every summer .

Fans are a key .Move the air , move , move, move it. until about 85 degrees or so that is . The newer 20 inch box fans do a great job of it .. Central air will do a great job too, if set at 78 degrees , with the fans . If you do not have central air , get a window unit , have a cool room or two.The small window units only take 7 amps or so .

Drink lots of Water , Gatorade , even cold milk . Never drink pop , as the sugar and caffeine will do you in . Do your work in the morning ,till about noon or so . Then take it easy . If the rooms get stifling , go to the open shaded porch or a shady hardwood tree . Never set under a pine tree , as they keep the heat . At least your Mid-west areas cool down some come night time . Cool out the house then . In the South , it often stays in the upper 70′s all night .

————————————————————————————————

10. The Reader;s Digest , a venerable monthly magazine that has somehow survived longer then one would have thought , is up for sale again . In the past 5 years they have changed hands 3 times , and went bankrupt once . Almost every “Plain’ family has a drawer of old copies of it somewhere , except maybe the rolly-nollys , and they have them perhaps in the barn somewheres. They are hoping to get perhaps 900 million bucks for the whole thing  . They paid like 800 million $$ for the Riemen publications about ten years ago .

We do not subscribe to the WSJ at this time , for lack of time to read it . We do , however , keep the WSJ on our “favourites”.  To be locked out of many of it’s articles is no problem at all. Just type any of the locked WSJ story headings into google , and it will come up at once in entirety , Why Subscribe ?

9.A man in Greenville Co. SC recently received an overdue water bill , for 2 months in 2001 . The water man was at the door , insisting the computer could not be wrong , when the homeowner found the 10 year old receipts .

8. Houses continue to drop in prices monthly . A news item predicts a 20% drop for next year . If the following year only has a 19% decline in housing prices , would that be an ”improvement”?

7. In North Dakota , an 82 year old man who now resides in a nursing home and has spent 17 years studying the North Dakota State Constitution ,claims that because of some missing or mixed up words in it , North Dakota is not a legitimate State.

Some folks do actually study those long , dry documents , it’s no wonder the poor fellow ended up in the nursing home .

That is about as obscure an obsession  as the man I know who collects old sets of encyclopedias (there is an endless supply of those), or a young chap we know  in Missouri that reportedly has a roomful of old dictionaries ..  ……Ah, we need to leave now to hunt for some more light Bulbs..   July 14-11

6. All those folks falling out of the bleachers at ball games ? Our take on the one last night with all the folks hanging on to his legs is that it was staged .

And the one where the 39 year old fireman died in Texas ? Look at the video , and it is rather plain  he stole the ball from the other man and paid the price .

———————————————————————————————-

5. The Midwest is fixing to get almost unprecedented heat the next few days . Everyone that can needs to just slow it down . Keep cool somehow , we suppose there are still a lot of houses up there without any AC . If possible , get hold of a 5K unit , in reserve in case you need it . They cost $100 at Kmart ,are light and easy to install , cost very little to run and will cool at least one room . July 11-11

4. All the USA flags flying , what happened to the flags plan-ted on the Moon over 40 years ago ? According to several experts , several were almost surely destroyed when the landing module took off for the mother-ship. They were too close .  As for the rest , they were just ordinary nylon flags , and if still there , are almost surely faded and or tattered badly……..And no , they are not visible from here or the shuttles , no matter how powerful a scope used.  July 05—11

—————————————————————————–

3. Space Shuttle launches  Goodbye . The final Shuttle mission is scheduled to lift off next week , July 08-11 . At well over a Billion $$$ for a final blast-off  , it was never the Cheap way to Space it was envisioned to be . (7 Million a pop was promised originally). They only averaged a bit over 4 shots a year , losing 2 . But it was still worth it , in jobs, inventions , and innovations realized. Much of today’s gadgetry is a direct result of the Space program over the last 50 years.

We ourselves saw ,and toured around the original ST1 space shuttle poised on the pad in Jan. 1981 ready to blast off . 2 of the 5 shuttles in the fleet  are no more , going to pieces in accidents.

Another bit of shuttle trivia is that there never was a ST13 flight . At no.11 they changed the numbering system , then changed it back several dozen flights later .  The last flight is No. ST135..

The entire Shuttle program over 30 years cost approx $ 200 billion , in today’s dollars .  In the earlier Gemini-Apollo programs , from 1961-1971 the cost was about $125 Billion in today’s money .However , the earlier Program yielded about 95% of technological and other improvements realized.

We were curious why only 4 people are on this final Shuttle mission . The answer is that the USA has no capabilities lined up at all for any type of rescue , if something went awry. The Russians do , with old fashioned rockets , but only for a max of 4 people.

The Atlantis was scheduled to be retired last may , but was readied to cover for any emergencies the past 8 months . Like a spare tire ready to go , they did decide to reuse it for the final shot .  July06

1. Worthington, Indiana. , the New order Amish group there has the best and the worst of it to look ahead to . About 30 families in size , they have been pretty well written off now, by the main line Amish at this time.

The reason ?  The Spiritual  journey they are on now seems to have taken them beyond the lowly and ornery horse as a primary transportation method . And for that they are now ostracised by most Amish . The description we heard from a strident Amishman very lately is that they have ”Went all to pieces”. Apparently all except a handful of their families are united in this , including all their acting preachers.

It is an established fact ,throughout the last 50 years, that most New order Amish , if they continue on a Spiritual journey of life , will eventually reach that point , and that bodes well for them indeed . It shows continuing Spiritual growth , and not a stagnating of purpose , unlike many mainline Amish Goals .

One of the central claims of Main line Amish is that they are clearly on the right ”path” because they have been around so long .. To that we would note , and point out that they have not been nearly around as long as the Christian Catholic religion , (About 1200 yrs less) .

And there are a lot of similarities between Strict Amish today , and the Catholics of the past several hundred years . There is some good in both of them , but not a lot of Spiritual content to stimulate the spiritual hearts.

The Worthington Ind. Amish group is fixing to run into some severe persecution from their former Brethren , perhaps not from physical fires or swords , but certainly just as bad , being treated and viewed as mongrel dogs is about as bad as that . The Stricter Amish have almost 300 years experience in this kind of mental torture , long before there were cars , even before they fully utilized horses to ride around . Hatred is always from the devil , no matter what the religious cloak it is under .

May they remember that if their journey is with God , they will be sustained .  And will not later regret their following God instead of man’s unfounded strictures . That has often been the real Anabaptist way of life.         June 08 -11

100 Watt Light Bulb hoarding .How & why now

June 28th, 2011

An update on our stocking up on the 100 watt incandescent light bulbs .(1300 and counting .Regular old fashioned ones). We’ve well passed the 350 4-pack mark that makes us a serious contender as a “Lightbulb King” .Following are a few reasons how and why we are collecting on and on and on.

1.We continue the buying unabated , before the federal cutoff date of Jan. 1-2012 , in less then 6 months  the 100 watt regular bulbs are history. We suspect they will be wiped out well before that date.

1b. We have always been a full 100 watt bulb user . Perhaps the early years of doing with flickering , smelly kerosene lamps has a bit to do with it .

2. It takes a real 100 watts of light to see to get that splinter out of a finger or palm of one’s hand .

3.The government and industry data I’ve seen does not take into account the 6 to 9 months of the heating season, depending on the area , when these are actually little heaters in each room plus real light makers , dual use . What is greener then that ?

In the summer , when it is hot there may be a case for using the curly ones.

4. We have hoarded only USA made 100 watt light bulbs . In our area that means only the Sylvana red box ones , made in st. marys Pa USA.

We avoid all regular light bulbs Made in China , which is 99% of the bulbs in stores today . They tend to last only a portion of stated average  hours , sometimes explode for little or no reason , may contain lead , and a poor vacuum seal means one cannot store them for very long. Some of the Chinese ones are boldly marked as ”extra long life , 3000 hr. bulbs”. The real truth to most of those claims is 50 hours or so .

All the above faults also may apply to the CFL , or curly new type bulbs too,  as they are all made in China , with non-existent quality controls , it seems . Some folks claim the curlys flicker and give out less light then rated . Disposing of them may be a problem , too .

We recently had purchased one of those outdoor security spaghetti lights that was supposed to last like 10 years or more , took like 50 watts or so to light up the whole yard.. Well , 6 months later the bulb is dark forever , and we cannot quite come up with the receipt..

The new Curly bulbs must be installed straight up or down . A Horizontally installed bulb tends to break like a melted Popsicle and the mercury inside may escape ..ugh..

5.These soon to be banned regular bulbs are only available now in a few  “Dollar type” stores in our area at least the USA made ones.. We are sticking with the 750- 1000 hr range ones as they only cost a buck a 4- pack .

Most of these stores stock weekly , so we wipe out all the stock  in that particular wattage, which is usually 12 packs of 4 , and that generates an automatic reorder for the following week .

That we are referred to as “E Bay man ” in several of these  stores would tend to make one familiar with the different possible angles of the endeavor . In fact , they are for sale on E bay now ,at $4 a pack on up , plus shipping .

6. We do claim to have a few standards . One ,we don’t drive out of the way to ”hunt the Bulbs”. At least not far . Also we save all the receipts , as it would be awkward to explain this amount of undocumented items in some dimly lit future .

7. If a few are good , many are better . That may be the hoarder’s mantra. We don’t play golf , hunt wild animals in a bloodsport , or buy lottery tickets ,and never have . Having a 100 year supply of anything puts one in a unique bracket of some sort.

8. The question is , are we planning to continue on next year with the 75 watters ? They are still legal for another year, as of now . We doubt it , because they just do not have the zing , or zip of the full 100 watt ones. And then there may be a looming storage problem ,too.

On the other hand , the light bulb bug bites deep , maybe we should ride this thing all the way out. We wish all a ”light bulb high wattage ” .

Jesse wagler June 28-2011

update july 11-11 .The US House of representatives is now considering a bill to repeal the ”light bulb” laws . Ah ,now wouldn’t that be a pretty kettle of fish ? We doubt that will occur , at this late date.

400 mile yard sale on Highway 68 .Ky.

June 7th, 2011

We rather inadvertently took part in the famous 400 mile yard sale on June 04-11 . It stretches across KY. from west to east , we happened on it when we left Lexington headed towards the river town of Maysville  Ky,on the Ohio river , on Hwy. 68 . It is a 4 day thing that those folks there must prepare for all year .

We arrived at our relatives’ house in Mays’ Lick about 2 hours late , but it was fun . We actually did not end up buying a lot , but talking to the Ky native population is interesting indeed . We bought a  15 lb box of roofing nails for $3 , a single wood shoe spreader for 50 cents , and a few other small items . That was about it .

As we travel North from Lexington Ky . the quality of the offerings declined with each mile . A good part of it was stuff that would be declined by most thrift stores . As usual , the best yard sale goods was found in Church parking lots or Church Gyms. We got the nails in a Church parking lot  from a nice couple that also had their entire VHS movie collection for sale for $10 . They said one can no longer buy any used players in that area , which is unlike what it is at home in SC . In subsequent conversation , they mentioned there was a wedding planned for that Church at 3 PM , And that ”The Bride had just driven by and given them a hard look”. At that point the Nails were easy to get for a song .

The Native Ky folks there,  are a hardy folks , and really don’t care to visit with anyone they do not know . The big exception is that they love to talk about their stuff, and open right up then .

It was a hot day , and one is taken aback by all the tattoos  on arms , necks , and about everywhere else . A favourite spot to display a tattoo , seems like , is on the outsides of each leg , from the ankle up as far as they happen to be exposed.  We can’t say we have ever seen that before , maybe it is a local thing .

Carolina Springs Academy Due West SC

May 26th, 2011

We noticed Carolina Springs Academy still has their Web Sites up and running .  The Campus is today growing up in weeds and abandoned . Most of the therapeutic Animals , (Horses , Sheep , etc) died a horrible death of starvation when the place was abandoned in 2010 .It was purported to be a place that helped troubled youth . A lot of really naive folks fell for this flim -flam crowd. Do not send money to these folks ., Send it to the Humane society in Greenwood SC that managed to rescue a few , very few , of the poor critters found there, still alive.  The local solicitor , A Mr. Jerry Peace, claimed he was trying to find who was responsible for that and   bring appropriate charges , but he never has . Too much Campaign money around , perhaps.may27-11

Update Dec– 11. Several of the principles owners of this property are still trying to re-open this as  a  “Magnolia hills Christian Boarding School ” . Nothing Christian about it that we can tell , it is all about parting gullible folks with unruly kids from their money .

Unser Leit ..The Amish Story . Also news & views .MAY-2011

May 6th, 2011

——————————————————————————————

——————————————————————————————-

10. A new book we are reading , and are quite excited about. We were hearing snatches here and there about it . And there it was ,laying in the Church library , we’ve no clear explanation how it got there .

“Unser Leit” A story of the Amish , by a Leroy Beachy from Ohio . Is a 2 volume set of about a thousand pages . ($85 on amazon.About $57 in wholesale lots of 3 or more)This has got to be the ultimate read about the Amish , from 1600 AD on to today .  Light historic , with hundreds and hundreds of antidotes about Amish Worship , Life and experiences through the last 400 years , we need to get us a copy , as a borrowed copy won’t do . Very well written , this has got to be this generation’s definitive “show and tell” explanation about the Amish , Though we wonder how The Amish will Accept it themselves. (As the writer is not now Amish himself , and he does discuss all relevant issues). Amish are big readers in general , though most other folks are not . There is surprisingly little serious reading in most of our circles today , with face book and all that to compete.

By saying “Light historical ” , we would point out a good bit of it is conjecture , based on official records and oral history , and private letters , in volume 1 . It is all in how one interprets it , and can be an interesting take indeed.

Though we wish the Author had put a bit more thought to the Title itself . It sounds like a Touristy or perhaps Hutterite thing , though it is much , much better then that . Today ,most people from Amish extract cannot read or talk that language , with a notable exception , almost everyone from Holmes and Wayne counties , in central Ohio can and do talk it , even many “English” folks too.

.Often a historian about the Amish or Anabaptist ,is either a good writer , or a good historian , rarely both ,as this writer appears to be .And he appears to have had access to , and used modern computer technology , and it shows .

The Author makes a valiant attempt to soften the rather harsh  image of the first Amishman , Jacob Amman . After 300 years we suppose that it is time someone tries , though that is a tough sell indeed. Historians have been writing about him about that long. According to even his peers , he was not a man you wanted to “”fall out”‘ with. The Amish have always somewhat admired their founder for skewering the Mennonites without ceasing. These early Anabaptist were being hunted like animals , their farms and livelihoods confiscated . Their meetings were often disrupted and outlawed , with long prison sentences for any and all of them . But yet they still found plenty of time and energy to battle vigorously among themselves ,often over trivial points. Go figure.

He points out they were first called Amish or “Omish” only in America . When the Waglers first came to Canada in 1848 ,there was an old story about their confusion when someone pointed down the road saying , “The Amish live down that way” . They had never heard that term before , describing themselves .

A good example of serious  studies on the Amish ,is the late great historian John A Hostetler , a serious  “Amish “historian but not that good a writer , and without computer resources ,like we have today.

Also the Pathway publisher’s  Historians actually are Amish , Write with a hard edge of reality , and do not have modern Tech to help them . It really is a hard life , and as practiced today is often somewhat a shell of it”s origins . Feet washing at Communion and serious shunning of erring members were the 2 original issues that caused the split with the Mennonites . vestiges of one or other   still affect most conservative Mennonites in some way . An Anabaptist type Church without Religion can be a common thing today , as it has been throughout history.

Volume 2 is more about the Amish and how they evolved in America . The discussion about the “Amish sleeping Preachers “‘ in the late 1800′s is very informative . There are today 12 communities of them still going . We have been acquainted with a few of those folks over the years , they are about as nice as they can be .We notice a few of them even spend time in Florida , in winter.

The people who actually listened to these “sleeping preachers” always claimed that they were ‘sharp’ and ‘spirit filled’ .However , several trained News reporters who had sat in these sessions , claimed they were nothing more then garbled and disjointed phrases , without meaning. We think they may be a cult .

Also , the late Eli Gingerich of Middlebury Ind.  is quoted on what it should mean to be Amish . Yes , he was a good Amishman , and a good quick thinker.

History”s best known Anabaptist Tome among the Amish  is the “Martyr”s Mirror” .A huge  book , It is a hard read , and we have never met anyone who has read it through , though many have tried .

Another book often found among Amish & Anabaptist shelves , is “Josephus” a historical Jewish account of happenings just after the time of Christ , though it never mentions Jesus except in one apparently added on paragraph. We have always been somewhat suspicious of any claim of inspiration from it .

9f The Chairman of the board of a major Anabaptist Mennonite  foreign mission program , has recently been arrested in Va. on serious sexual predator charges . By using backtracks , one can still bring up the info on the site , though they rightfully tried to scrub it clean of his name . the Devil really is after any and all , it seems. may 29-11

9e That French Airliner that disappeared into the south Pacific several years ago. A tremendous amount of effort was put into finding the wreckage and extracting the data from the recorders , to find out what happened to it . The unvarnished fact appears to be extensive Pilot error , compounded many times over . They somehow stalled out and dropped all 37000 ft to the water . In less then 4 minutes .

United air flight 232 in 1989 still stands as the most miraculous crash save in airline history against all odds , most on that jumbo jet were saved. Even computer models were unable to replicate all systems failure , and then land the plane like they managed to . Experience did that , and a lot of guess-work.

9d.In Saudi Arabia there is a campaign to keep women drivers off the roads . In fact ,beating women drivers with sticks is considered acceptable to them , to discourage women driving cars . 9d …In 1978 a 10-10 Mccullough chain saw cost just a bit over $300. ($1440. in today’s dollars. ) That according to an actual receipt from back then . For that major investment you got a real Chain saw backed by an actual USA company with parts  available . According to the owner , the saw still runs after wearing out 2 saw-bars.

9c. Tornadoes are causing havoc in the mid-west . our State of SC has been Quite weather-wise this year , unlike many other years . In fact, we are bone dry now . Mobile homes are death traps in storms like this whether they are anchored down or not , they have the strength of tissue paper in storms like that. Single wides have been fading away , maybe this will speed that process a bit . May25-11

9b.  And here we have a 100 watt light bulb collecting update . They are being banned the end of this year . we happen to use them in wintertime ,,,,soooo , we stock up , right ? We prefer the “made in USA ‘ bulbs , and have cultivated 2 sources for them . (Dollar type stores still have them periodically, at a dollar for a quad-pack).  If we figure on using 25 Light Bulbs a year , lets just admit we are up to a 25 year supply at this point.  Why stop now ? what happens in the 26th year ?

Anyways , it’s cheaper then playing golf .

9a. Exploding watermelons in China puts the spotlight on growth chemicals the farmers overdosed the melons with . Turns out USA farmers use the same chemicals on Kiwi fruits and grapes too.  Goodbye Kiwi & Grapes , you were good.  May18-11

9. A new report on housing  notes that most houses have lost substantial value since April 2010 , That was the month the Housing credit ended , all that free money stuff.  So a win-win turns into a lose-lose .  Maybe it’s time for an Insurance claim to even things up.

8. If you have a cell phone , the President will be able to speak to you . Technology that enables homeland security to contact all cellphones will be enabled soon ,and don’t forget the GPS capabilities each phone has . It will drive conspiracy buffs to distraction , and they do have a point. may11-11

7. That stealth helicopter that the SEALS left junked in Bin Laden’s yard .. It fell prey to one of the basics of flying . It lost lift because of all the walls and stuff below it . plunk, down it came. People somewhat or very familiar with the fixed-wing  aircraft often are suspicious of the helicopter , why it stays up at all , and so do we.

6. A little side note on the famous Buchanan  co. Iowa Amish School to-do of 1965.

We’ve all seen the photos of the little Amish kids sprinting for the cornfields with the truant officer behind them . What angered the local ‘English’  folks so was a sneaky deal the local Education Superintendent had made with the Amish population that then backfired on them .

He had promised them that if the Amish would all come in and vote yes in a local referendum to consolidate the public schools , he would then support exempting their little one room Amish Schools from the mix . They did , and he didn’t. What followed was a horrendous mess that was salvaged by powerful national Lawyers , who worked for free to help establish freedom for one room Amish schools all over the Country . may08-11

About the only other time we can remember that the reticent Amish were persuaded to vote en mass was in the 1960 general election for President . thousands of Amish registered to vote , and did so With a grim determination .You see , one of the major candidates was ‘Gedoltish”  (Catholic Backgrounded). Amish have always feared any and all things Catholic , even more then the Devil himself , it seems .

And who were they voting against with this vigor ? President John F Kennedy , our 3rd most popular president ever .

5. In the South ,AC is a must to cope with the heat . We have a lot of Window units to address this issue at different houses we rent out. Our best buy ,and consistently dependable unit , has been the 5K Frigidaire with the front face fan . These cost about $100 ,are made in China like they all are now , but do quietly cool any regular size room at very little cost.  The things to remember is , they must cycle in and out every now and then , or they will freeze up . And you need to make a hole in the outside back so the water will drain out better . Otherwise ,it is a plug in and forget thing . Today’s units are so much more efficient then the units of even 10 years ago , and adjusted for inflation , they cost about 25% of what they used to . This year we had trouble finding this particular make and size , Until son-in-law Mark spotted them on-line at K-mart .

4. the conspiracy crowd is running wild about this whole Bin Laden thing . Anyone is believing anything they want to , in this modern age of instant info. There is a large group that believes that President Bush Knew all about the 9-11 terrorist acts , before they happened . This is mostly based on their theory that Pres Bush did not look surprised enough when told , or whispered to about it .

A small but growing number now believes that ex Pres. Bush was on that SEAL team and personally shot Bin Laden so he would not talk , about all the  conspiracies!!!

3. Whew! And today we almost bought us a boat . A 28 ft 1978 Chris Craft  Catalina Cabin Cruiser , to be specific.

And why on earth would we want to own a boat ? From my mom’s side , the Yoders’ (Fishs) ,I must have inherited a vexing fear of deep water , and an almost giddy fear of being on a small boat over that same water. This excludes Cruise ships , of course.

Grandpa John l Yoder once was said to have  stated that he never will die of drowning , because he plans never to go more then ankle deep , in the wilds or in the tub . And indeed he did not , he died at a ripe old age of 97 years ,in his bed.

Back to the boat. The canvas assembly over the bridge was missing , but the roomy but tight cabin was very nice , including the bitty bathroom and the large bed tucked up under the nose part . The outside looked really nice , about all it needed was the name painted on the front . Since it looked just like a smaller version of the ”Minnow II” ,that would have been easy indeed.

For those of you who do not recognize that name, it is from ”Gilligan’s island”. A family type movie series which we have enjoyed watching on tapes with the children for at least the last 5 years or so .

About the only other things missing was the entire engine and drive assembly , but why would you need that if you never intend to get it wet ? We agreed on the price of the boat ($500) but never could come together on my Idea that the newer heavy duty trailer should come with it . Why , he wanted the outrageous price of $750 for the whole thing.

My Idea was to back it up to a shady spot by the creek somewhere out of sight , Block up the boat and use it as a Kid’s playhouse or sleepover spot , and sell the relatively new trailer for the $500. Oh well , maybe next time .may 07-11

2. Mother’s day is here . The origins of this observation goes way back to the close of the horrifying USA civil War . This war had pretty well gutted the Nation , Nothing about it was Nice ,. (In spite of today’s Colorful Commemorations of it ) .

It  (mother’s Day) was aimed at promoting Peace , hoping for an end to all Wars , with Mothers promoting that view.

It did not go over that well ,observation of it  was sporadic , and eventually about died out . Until about 1908 , that is . In 1914 President Wilson proclaimed it a national observance , as it remains today . Without the ‘Peace for all’ moniker ,though. So , be nice to Your Mother today , and always.

Predictions For the Future .2011 & beyond

May 2nd, 2011

All right now,  we hesitate to predict anything ,for anytime, as we do not know the future , but know one who does . Let us just mention a number of scenarios that may happen in the future , by looking at the past . So here we go ………Remember , Here the word “will’ , only means, “may,or may not”"

1.The economy…. We will muddle through into a national recovery . The USA is the greatest , most diverse , also the most envied country the world has ever seen . The poor countries of Europe may be worth keeping an eye on , just to see what to stay away from . Housing will stay flat or sink in value for the next several years .  (Dec -10)

Mar-11 update . Housing is still dropping ,a lot. We saw an article today that questions the wisdom of building or paying for a new house , when existing ones are so much cheaper . Unless you have gobs of $$$$$ burning a hole in your pocket , of course.

1-b . At some point the so called civilized Europeans will turn to War to vent their frustrations , just as the Germans did twice in the last Century. War on each other and everyone , because that is the heart of man.

2. The admiration of all things “plain ” will at some point turn to hatred. ……The Anabaptist throughout history have almost always faced derision and public rejection as a norm , and have prospered for that. This will include “plain” named restaurants ,too.

3. Bath fixtures….What will the all new colors be for bath tubs and commodes & sinks in the next few years ? 35 years ago green and gold and even blue was considered hot. even an occasional bright purple. Then it had to be cream colored or not at all , then pure shiny White fixtures for the last few decades . It is now a boring color, we need new taste in colors . And we are stumped here.

4. How old does a person need to be to be considered “really, really  old” ? .I will quote my dad on this , on his take on the old folks in Davis county Indiana.. “In the 30″s through the 50″s , to be 80 years old was about as old as you could expect to get at the best . Then it was 85 , and the last decade or so it was 90 .  It is now at about 95 years of age , the cut-off drop-off where you could expect to go at any moment , with or without a reason “. end of quote..

(And in our youth , we thought anyone over 30 was ancient ?)

5 Newspapers as we are used to , will evolve into local news and ad sheets . National news in a newspaper is already outdated when it is printed . Evolving into an on-line tool is a must if they are to survive . A troubling thing is that most folks don’t know or care about anything past their immediate noses . That is not just a Mennonite thing , that is all over like that .

6.The National debt and spending as the USA is doing now cannot go on much longer . Taxes collected from citizens only pay about 30% of today’s spending . And in Peacetime too . This will hit the wall just like the Dot-com bubble did , and the housing Bubble too .

7.President Obama , our Country”s leader , may be re-elected in 2012 . The odds are quite high if the Re-pubs don’t come up with a credible candidate. They haven’t yet. If the economy comes roaring back , or even tottors back in the next year . that is good news for him. What is very bad for him is the rising Gas prices . Anything above about $4 a gallon will do in any politician .

To be continued

15. A news item notes about the Army Corp of engineers opening the levee in Missouri and letting the Mississippi waters flood 130000 acres .

They are learning now that bottling the rivers or even creeks up does more damage then good in the long run. About 99% of the time it works , but then it does not , in a big way . Folks that build in low spots should expect floods . Even insurance companies balk at that ,

————————————————————

Talking of insurances , we recently met up with an older Anabaptist Brother who started up with the original CAM insurance in Ind. over 40-50  some years ago . I asked him about the replacement policy they have now in which they want you to insure at new replacement value , whether it is an old worn out machine or a dilapidated building ,or anything between.

They even claim that you do not have a ”sharing’ heart if you don’t do that.

“Why ‘ said this Brother ,who is still a Charter representative of theirs today, “that would not be right” “No one should get more insurance for something then it is worth” . He was pretty empathetic that this was not at all so ,and could not be.

Welcome to the new way of thinking in the younger Anabaptist generation .There is now a whole generation of them that has no scruples accepting almost anything from the government or from each other , in any way imaginable when it involves $$$$$.

We would note here that yes , secular insurances wants one to insure at replacement value , but will then fight vigorously every single claim like that almost 100% of the time .

14. We had to stay up and listen to Pres. Obama last night . A President does not give a speech late at night without good reasons .

And so they got him .Bin laden , that is . Living in a modern city in a huge house without telephones or Internet service. Here was a fervent religious man who pulled off the biggest , most surprising , and the cheapest in expense, attack in history on ”The great Satan”‘ .That is what he called all things American .

One wonders when this ardent religious man discovers who his real master was ? Very sad indeed ..may 02-11

13. And so the most sought after birth certificate in history is now out , and it appears to be genuine . Why now ? Obama appears ready to take on and win the 2012 election , if he can figure out what to do about the sky high gas prices . Perhaps take it down to a reasonable seeming $3.

12. Today ,May 01 is known as May day . I had always assumed it was a Canadian day of celebration that the long winter is over , as they do celebrate it . It was more of a Day of workers ‘ recognition , but is today not much  held in the USA.

———————————————————————————-

11. The great Royal Wedding is done . The British claimed that almost Two thirds of the world will be watching it live .We sure hope it goes better for them then for his parents .

Well, we missed it ,and no small wonder . At 6am this morning , all things considered ,is out of line . Why ,the only folks up then is Pa. folk rushing off to work to support their mortgages ,,indeed.

10. A shrill high pitch whine is in the air . The every 13 year cincitas , a grasshopper like bug,  are back . It is a Southern states thing . They come every 13 years , and spend the remainder deep in the roots of trees , staying alive , we suppose. Apr. 27-11

9. After reading in WSJ about the scary condition of most meats sold in stores today , we are back on a low meat diet .According to the article ,the feedlot and chicken farmers don’t want a single animal to get sick , so they dose them all, all the time with meds in the feed.. We’d like to make it a No-Meat thing , but it is just to difficult . So , baked potatoes and beans it is , for a while .Apr 26-11

7.And now for a chuckle from the Amish Budget weekly . A Beachy Church in the State of Fl. found themselves without a preacher one Bright Sunday Morning. Not to worry , they pulled a taped message from the tape archives and listened to a re-run from one of their Pastors . Really , we did not make this one up .

6. Tax Day is today Apr. 18 . Almost half of US households pay no Income tax ,. And as for yours truly ?  we filed for an automatic extension , so we have till Oct 15 , to deal with it . The catch here is you need to pay any amount due to avoid penalty then .

5. “Atlas shrugged” , part one , is a new movie released this past weekend. Independently produced, it made 1.7 million at 300 theatres , which they say is a very good start . Most folks reading this will know what it is , As for the rest , ah well , just forget it ………Let’s just say it is the right-wingers’ blueprint for life……. Apr 18-11.

4.   The CAM missions from Ohio has a unique ministry going . It is a Billboard on the freeways thing that has a Toll free Number on it to call , for any reason or no reason .People are on call to answer any needs they can . This is different as there is no attempt to talk a respondent into anything ,just to help. CAM is literally swimming with money ,millions and millions of it , so the extremely high costs of the 100 or more billboards is no problem  at all. This is surely innovative , and hopefully a lot more effective then sending a passel of missionaries off somewhere to serve themselves. APr.11 -11————————-

3. We recently studied a historical  book ,”The Forsaken’, By Tim Tzouliadis , a well foot-noted study of The several thousands of Americans who were lured to Russia in the 1930′s as immigrants by the despot communist leader Josf Stalin . Upon arrival , most had their passports taken away at once , and most eventually perished . A very few got the promised jobs , but most ended poorly . Some were shot as spies , and many imprisoned in the Soviet Gulags , for decades . A few , a very few , made it back to the USA in the late 1980′s and 1990′s .A good case is made about the US state department’s always shoddy treatment of that whole issue , of the up to 10000 Americans lost in the limbo of the great Russian Purges. the US government appears to have decided that if they immigrated to Russia , they were Bolsheviks and deserved what they got ,then and later.  Less then 2 dozen very elderly Men returned , completely ignored by their government and the News Media.

Also , that several hundred USA POW’s (Captured US servicemen from WWII, and the Korean War) were kept secretly for several decades in these camps is likely . None were ever retrieved , though most returning American and other internees described them , as still alive in the 1960′s.

Boris Yeltsin , the premier in the early 1990′s came out in that time and noted that there were lots of those over the years.

Interestingly , it mentions one Albert Troyer , and his wife Eva . He was a citrus growing expert ,a horticulturist who is credited with starting the Lemon growing industry in south Russia . He went there in the early 30′s , was arrested in 1936 and shipped off to the Gulag . After 10 years , his wife never heard of him again .

————————————————————————————

2. We read , or sometimes scan, a number of books . Including  ‘ Amish’ type books . These are often quite good , or not so good , occasionally downright poorly written or conceived.

We recently spent an hour scanning one that fit the latter description very well . “Coming home Again”‘ By Benuel M Fisher , of New Holland Pa. The Subject of this particular book was a Man named David D Erb .

Reading  (or scanning) this book would tend to make us believe that the high points of this poor subjects’ life were— Abusing his wife for so many years that she divorced him and married another man . And that he once shot 2 Deer with one bullet , and also once shot 3 geese with 2 shots. (With plenty of hunting photos to prove it .)

There is a photo that shows the honorable discharge Of David Erb from the US Army after WWII , And that is to be respected in the subject”s life , but not much else .

A poorly written Book about a mostly sordid life lived , at least as it is described in this author -published book. Come on folks , just because it is advertised in the budget , does not mean it is worth buying . Apr.03-11

And what do we mean by “scanning’ a book ? if we do not want to spend too much time on a questionable book , we can read the relevant parts in an hour or less for a small book , an hour and a half for a full sized one. If good , we go back and start at page one , if bad , no more time is wasted . (JFK recommended this)

1.

And so , we must balance this with a good Read , and we will . “Hiking Through” by Paul V. Stutzman , Of Berlin Ohio . A Very Very well written full sized book about one man’s journey through hardship in life , and up the Appalachian trail one whole summer. Warning ;; This book will tire one out , because you will stay up later reading it then you should, and your feet will hurt from all the walking , it is so well described..

Mar-April -11 News & Views

February 28th, 2011

Insight or inundation . We learn about what we want to , from life’s journey. We may not always be right ,but we try to have a broader view of the World , and it’s events then may be common for us “Plain” folks.

16. A store in our State of SC has been caught selling Raccoon meat . It was a gas station-variety type store . It would be a bit problematic buying one”s meat where one bought the gas , seems to me .

Our local McDonald’s fast food place smells exactly like a pig-pen ,at least the pig-sleeping area. Kind of a musty unwashed small. I know , because in our past we used to raise Pigs . But that fast food joint is still open . Pig food is probably more nutritious then fast food , too.

15 . Habitat For Humanity , is a world wide organization based in south Georgia . They have a goal of supplying housing for needy peoples . They recently dedicated a house locally , with appropriate news coverage of the project .

We have never been involved with any of their projects , though we had a tenant once that ended in one of their houses, as the owner. It was a “single’ mom in her upper 20′s with 3 kids who was then in her 4th marriage , with her then current husband in SC state  prison at that time . Her father mentioned to me at the time that ,”She can sell the house in 5 years and make lots of money”. So , We don’t know , but suppose that it is a good program , to supply houses for folks , though a secular one . As in Religion not being any factor at all in the building or ownership of these basic houses. I think that is one of their by-laws that that is that way.

We may point out that the father was The Main Tenant , the daughter was just staying there between marriages , which was most of the time .Mar 28-11

14. On Saturday ,Alaska Airlines had to cancel 150 flights which kept up to 12000 people on the ground . Was it bad weather , or wild animals on the runways , or some other uncontrollable misfortune ?

No , none of the above . Somewhere , an electric transformer blew , blanking out the main computer bank of Alaska Air. And kapoof, it was gone . The ability to fly all those Planes . We still remember where they used to have back-up batteries or even generators rigged up , so power failures do not disrupt things as drastically as that .

I very recently discussed with an Amish man how the Amish can make it without Computers . “Actually” he stated , “A number of Amish have good regular access to Computers , especially where there is Wi-fi ,and the sun is shining , to charge the laptops with”.  Mar 27-11

Maybe the Computer is really indispensable ., if even the Amish are on-lined !

13.           No. 6 , below, evolved over the past week about the corrupting of Truth ,how it destroys everything it touches. Sometime  we would like to do an Amish article , and discuss how our backgrounds affect us. I dislike Amish-bashing of any type . We don’t even care to see young folks doing ‘Amish’ suppers , it is like making fun of them. But then the intriguing question is , how can people 2 or 3 generations removed from Amish life still draw the same conclusions on life”s questions , though from a slightly different  or advanced psychical plane ?

12. We are wading our way through a huge book .The late Super Liberal , Arthur m. Schlesinger’s posthumous book , “Journals 1952-2000”. Published in 2007 this 900 page tome has a lot of insight into a noted Liberals’ thinking process. We only paid $1 for this new copy at a deep discount source . We may be the only Mennonite that has dared to read it , we fear .

The take on Former pres. Jimmy Carter , a democrat .  ”Carter was not a Baptist , but a Calvinist at heart , he would have loved to burn people at the Stake ”. ”A Cold calculating selfish person in every way , with a famous false smile ,that fooled people”. He also disdained President Carter because Carter claimed to believe the Genesis account of Adam & Eve in the Garden.

Wow , and we thought we were sometimes too sharp with words!

11. Mar. 20-11 If you happened to look at the full moon last night , you may have noticed it was extra bright , the brightest and sharpest it has looked since 1993 . It is because of  some astronomical anomaly of some sort .

And did we see it ? No , though we looked twice ,at midnight and at 2 o’clock. A very small localized rainstorm hovered over our part of the county all night , so be it . Ah well , there is still tonight .

———————————————————————————-

10. We often think of various government rules and decrees as intrusions on our liberties .

In 1970 Corning Glass Corp.  spent a lot of time and huge amounts of $$$ , inventing a safer car windshield , a truly tempered one that shattered into harmless pebbles in an accident . AMC  used those windshields the next year on most of it’s cars . Since it was about 20% more expensive , all the major car companies stuck with their Laminated windshields , that was 2 layers of glass , with some sort of sticky stuff in the middle to hold the sharp pieces together when shattered.

Thousands of people were dying every year , of cuts to their heads and throats , from sticking their heads through the glass car windshields in accidents . It took Government decrees in the mid-70′s to force all car companies to use the safer glass , and seat belts too. By then Corning Glass had written their invention off , and almost went bankrupt then because they could not sell the windshields to the big car makers in 1970. A shame , indeed .

Greedy car companies sacrificing lives to save a few dollars.

9. Like an old friend , the Reader”s Digest Monthly magazine arrived  today . It is a lot smaller then it was years ago , but it is getting back to the information trove format it used to be . For a few years there  , they were somewhat like a comic book with newsy tidbits.

And did we just mention the latest issue was rather slim ? Well, after we removed the 20 sheets that had ads printed on both sides , it was even slimmer . We enjoy doing that .Although it almost is something we do without thinking ,we must remember not to do it at the Dentist”s office or just anywhere , ripping out unneeded pages.

8. And now about light bulbs without electricity. . A Brazilian scientist has perfected how to get about 50 watts of light into a dark room for free, at least on sunny days . You take an empty 2-liter bottle , an  ounce of bleach ,fill the thing with water and stick it half way through the roof , it glows when the sun shines on it . Those bottles are almost indestructible , except for the cap, it”s good they found some use for them . Google “2 liter bottle for light” for online instructs. This should even be allowable for Amish ,except they may have to do with green light in the roof, that is because Mountain Dew bottles are green.     Mar15-11

Update Mar 18-11 If you haven’t stocked up on the 100 watt old-fashioned light bulbs , you are most likely too late . In most parts of the country , they are gone , wiped out ,ziltched. It’s not till Jan-12 that they are outlawed . you can still get them on EBay though , for about 4 times the money . Remember we told you about it here . several months back.

7. The Time Change this spring has been earlier then usual . Is it designed to get folks up early ? After all , we don’t live in Pa. with their “nose to the grindstone” life.

The old saying is ”Early to bed, early to rise , makes a person healthy , wealthy, and wise ” ..

To that I would retort with my aunt Martha”s (Mrs Pete Yoder)  comment in her old age .She lived Amish and hard all her days.

“All my life I have heard it said that   –Morgan Stund hadt gold ins mund— (Morning hour has gold in its mouth).  I”ve done that all my life and never found it”" End of  Auntie Martha’s quote.

Aunt Martha raised Chickens for the eggs , and got up at 4 or so every morning to light lanterns and roust the hens early with the hope they would lay 2 eggs in one day . at least she tried ,

6.When Church Schools go kaput , Can that Particular Church be far behind it ?

In the last several years , several Plain Anabaptist Christian Schools we know of have closed their doors .At least 3 come to mind here , that we are somewhat familiar with. In retrospect , a case can be made that  often  those were just symptoms of very serious spiritual problems in the sponsoring Churches involved in each School .

Spiritual Decadence comes to mind , where meeting after meeting is held to  ‘ fix’ problems , The  often overlooked good news is the Bible has all the answers needed .

The Problem of  Churches that have Serial Meetings about pressing issues, and never seem to solve anything , has intrigued me for some years .It got to the point that we avoided any and all part in those kinds of  things . Meetings like that  feel , and I believe  often are ,an Evil influence that are easy to avoid.

I have reached a tentative conclusion from experience on  the cause -effect of  that , and that is , it is often all about Truth , biblical Truth , that is . Once Truth has been Breached, subverted , or truth driven away (As in Truth Bearing Preachers ,perhaps).Nothing then seems to work , even if the smartest and the most sincere Reasoners give it their all , seemingly to no avail  . Even Biblical Truth presented no longer is seemingly effective in those cases .

Hidden or open sin can and will hurt a Church or entity too, It always has , but then Sin has always seemed to be close by . But The Church Still stands , in spite of Sin ,and always has .

Corrupting of  Truth may have a corrosive affect hard to fathom . Turning to Truth has no equal .Perhaps  the Biblical example of Nineveh would come to mind here . Truth did them no good at all until they engaged in the first step , and that was True and extended Repentance . Skip that step of repentance , and you are just treading water  . Truth never has a chance to take effect , in lives or Churches , because Biblical repentance never had it”s way. How about 40 days of it ?

That a School loses it’s vision and purpose , often is a reflection of the Spiritual condition of the local Church body running it . It is quite possible , perhaps probable  , that a Church like that can still function as an entity for a time, But be spiritually hollow and cold . Perhaps like a hollowed out oak tree , that still looks somewhat good on the out side , but inside is nothing at all .There almost seems to be a connection involved here  , of Christian Schools failing , and an organized apostasy becoming the accepted reality , of Church Life. Instead of believing or trusting in God , it is all about oneself , or ourselves.

Organized apostasy as a religion is nothing new . The entire Amish religious movement comes to mind , as it affects many of us even if we claim enlightenment from it. Amish are often the epitome of  organized self-righteousness in many ways, the Stricter they are , the more darkened they tend to become in Spiritual understanding . The  World  media tends to be enthralled by many things Amish lately. One of the Amish”s  main ‘selling” points is that they have stood the test of time . I would point out here that to the eye of the Lord , they have only been around less then half a day .(400 years).

And why are we talking Amish here ? Perhaps it is the thought that if we do not try to understand where we come from in Spiritual heritage, we may have difficulty seeing where we are going . And also , I”ve never heard of an Amish day School closing down ,except for demographics . (No longer needed , not enough kids or something)

5. the Japanese Earthquake thing is huge , the death toll may reach many many thousands . The entire island of Japan was moved a whole 8 feet .If the Nuke plants melt down , it will get even worse.

And what is the suggested antidote  for Nuclear fallout ? Specialized Iodine tablets , of course , taken at the approach of any distant fallout .And who has a good store of them in a corner of a drawer , that they never expected to use ,even now  ?   Your humble writer”s family ,of course .

If you do have some of these pill packets , they never expire , so keep them accessible , especially if you live close to a nuclear plant . Here in upstate SC , we live fairly close to the 8th most dangerous one in the US ,in  oconne county SC

update mar 16-11 It is hard to get a clear picture of what is happening to that reactor ,in Japan. It does not give confidence that the Japanese mindset is as it is .

One has to remember the group of Japanese businessmen who took the elevator down to the lobby, and  to safety, of that 2nd tower on 9-11 . They let a ports authority official talk them into just returning to their upper floor office , as everything was supposedly normal , just before the next plane hit below them , and they all perished . The “Monkey see , monkey do “” “Do only as you are told”, ethic is strong in Japan . That is not good for handling a Nuclear emergency  like this.

4. the only US coin worth it’s weight that circulates today is the lowly Nickel . Made up of 75% copper and 25% nickel , the base metal in each one is worth about 7 cents.

3. If you see or perhaps have one of those so called “Bradford Pear”" trees that are in full flaming Bloom now, Hear this . They may look pretty , but what you have is a non-native junk tree. Imported from China or someplace , they have no useful purpose ,besides making lot”s of work  , and are universally despised by horticulturists . if you have a whole row of these you have a whole roll of junk . They may look pretty , but so did the imported Starlings and English Sparrows two centuries ago . Take a chain saw to them so your neighbors don’t feel so sorry for you .

Perhaps the type of Folks that have trees like that , are perhaps the type that collect “Thomas Kincade’ collectibles . Ugh. Start up the Chain saw again ..Mar 08-11

2.  We have just returned from a 5 day cruise out of Jacksonville , Florida , which went to Key West and Nassau , Bahamas . On the ship one of the crew mentioned to us that just 2 weeks previously , the Templeton tours had put on the Great annual Gospel Singing cruise  on this very same boat .The 2050 passenger Carnival Fascination ship .

They were of course without the Bars and casinos being open on that chartered Christian cruise , From Feb 13-19 . When we got home we looked it up , and sure enough , they had gone. One of the sponsoring singing groups still had the room price sheets up from the singing cruise . After checking up on the price for exactly the same room , the same number of people , the same number of days on the same Ship . On the “singing cruise ” , they paid exactly Two and one half times what we did 2 weeks later.

Our bar bill was $0. 00 , and we never entered the casino at all .We even took along our own water bottles and Cokes . Admittedly , we stayed away from certain areas at certain times . But that is still a lot of $$$ just for getting sung to , and perhaps the Ship did not make a lot off of us .An interesting number noted by the purser was that our Cruise had 2400 passengers . It is rated at 2050 passengers but is allowed up to about 2500 paying persons by putting in more then 2 to a cabin .   Mar. 06-11 ..

(Our bill for Tickets, port charges, tips and taxes was almost exactly $1800. And that included Travel insurance , too. Using the price scale still up , the Bill for exactly the same cabins for the same folks , on the same ship on the Singing Cruise would have been  just a tad over $4500. , for a family of 5 . No travel insurance figured in here .)

The Carnival Co. has to get it”s money. The Templeton Co. has to make it”s , and the 25 groups of Gospel singers are mostly on for free too .Then take into account the lack of income  from the Drinking and gambling , and the shore excursions too , and it adds up to a lot higher cost ,for the Singing Charter cruise.

The experience exceeded our expectations , and we visited a foreign country too .

Several things to remember  So you have an enjoyable trip .

Do use a travel agent or professional ,they handle the sticky details ,and save money and unhappy surprises.

Do get your proper ID’s and make sure you have them with you . Our boat Left an old lady and her daughter standing at the Pier in Jacksonville Fl, because the Older lady had forgot her papers .

The Carnival Boat folks act as the Immigration Gatekeepers , as we found out when we got off at the end of the Cruise . At 8;10 we were still in our stateroom . By 8;30 we were on the freeway driving home . After leaving the Boat we walked a long gauntlet through the terminal , never stopping or showing our papers at all . About a half dozen teams of immigration officers were watching closely , very occasionally they would pull someone out to check things . That was how they debarked 2400 + people in 2 hours .

Do Re-board the boat an hour early on stops . We also left an extended family of 7 at Key West that never showed to re-board. The Boat Blew it’s whistle a number of times and waited an extra 30 minutes , in vain . Someone’s Cheap vacation turned expensive real quick .

The Card they give you on the boat keeps track of exactly who is on the Boat and who is not . We Slipped out of Nassau a half hour early because everyone was accounted for  .

Shore excursions are often a waste of $$$$. there are so many things you can do with just a bit of research , or just start walking , till you find something .Getting away from the fellow Ship”s passengers may be a worthy goal here . Watching the local entrepreneurs eye a motley Shore excursion group is an eye opener indeed.

We hired a nice Real estate agent- taxi driver In the Bahamas to give us a 2 hour tour of the things we wanted to see , then he dropped us off at the Beach By the Straw market in Nassau , close to the Ship . ($80.). Mar 10-11

1. The Medical profession has made tremendous strides in the past 100 years . Medical Doctors went from being scorned and avoided as butchers to being almost revered in that time , for their results. So have pharmaceuticals , or prescription drugs .

Probably one of the  the most hideous “cures” practiced in the last 2000 years was what was known as “Bloodletting “‘. This thing about bleeding the patient , for almost any and all ailment , kept world population low almost by itself . George Washington was almost bled to death because he had pneumonia , and died from it . Up to about 1925 , some medical schools were still recommending it . How awful indeed.

14. those 4 Amish Children that drowned in the creek in Ky ? They were all Waglers . Uncle Ezra Wagler”s son Jacob’s Grandchildren ,(Jacob lives in LaPlata Mo.), We do not personally know the Children , but the last name caught my eye right away .And they are all from the hard-scrabble groups , almost like the Swartzentruber Amish . (See our earlier Post on Uncle Ezra ,and the Botshaft Amish newspaper).

13. Is Bricklaying a Skilled Profession? I laid in a few Brick on an old Step last week , I’m not a bricklayer but do possess some small degree of proficiency at parts of it .

Here”s why . In the Mid-1970′s I was in between Careers , My Uncle Jonas Schrock of Davaiss Co . Ind hired me on to his Brick crew , And we somewhat managed to learn the trade ,at least a semblance of it .

At that time I Believe they got 12 or15 cents a brick  (Compared to a recent $1) . I had a hard time averaging 500 brick a day , don’t hardly know if we ever got up to that at all . The 500 brick threshold was a sort of cutoff point , after that you made a bit of $$$ for the boss. Somehow I doubt that Uncle Jonas , a very patient man , made any money off his nephew”s work .(Everyone needs an Uncle like that ). The only thing that ever got Uncle Jonas riled up was something to do about a “pattern” that either needs or does not need to be in the finished wall. We never rose to that level of accomplishment , or proficiency at it . After about a year we went on to other things , but we do retain a bit of skill at working on brick steps , when needed.

12. A story in Fortune magazine notes that the USA defense Budget is over 700 Billion a year now . It also notes that amount is more then the defence budgets of all the other countries in the world , combined , which is hard to grasp . A good part of the rest of the world”s Arms is sold to them by the USA ,too.

11.Many years ago when we used to tour far and or exotic places , as tourists ,or whatever ,one of the givens was you had a knowledgeable tour guide to enhance safety and give site information etc. It was sometimes a local person ,or perhaps someone from home who had been there before , and they were responsible , too.

Whatever happened to this idea that worked , and kept folks generally safe ?

10. President”s Day is upon us . Originally known as Washington’s birthday . Coincidentally , We just read an article recently about Pres. Reagan and if he was or was not religious in his life . It noted that if he was he kept it very well hidden . His church attendance was almost zero except for funerals . somewhat like Pres Lincoln , we suppose . They used scripture for speeches , that was about it . but then it noted Pres. Bush II read the Bible through regularly.

We picked up a 3rd hand copy of the Amish budget news weekly last night , and noticed some Bookstore in Ohio has a large Book ad in the budget , about Presidents . Prominent among the book ads is one about how very religious pres Reagan was all his life … One wonders where the astrologers fit in he depended on so much ?

And “”News Flash”" here ..Your humble blog writer his-self . yours truly is duly mentioned in the latest copy of the Amish Budget ,in the Editor”s corner too .. Wow , we are getting there now .

8.We are thinking ahead to the summer time . In the South , Fleas , ticks , a dozen different creepy crawlys want to live around, under or even in your house . Since we also have 2 little house doggies , they do their share of infesting things . We’ve always had a program of outside , under the house , and inside treatments , together they do work well . If nothing else gets you , the squirrels will .And lets not forget the anti-snake program either. The bigger part of snake control is keeping the mice away . If you have any number of mice, you will have snakes around soon ,looking for dinner .

Anyways , we have been studying up if there is a way to control all these pests in a more natural way then all the poisons and insecticides we use now .There are a lot of guaranteed products out there , which may or may not work.

We happen to have a lot of experience with the operation of Septic tanks over the years , and know that all those super treatments of powders and endzenes and what not are all , every single one , a waste of $$$.

You open up a troubled tank and examine what is floating in it .(With a forked stick ,of course). If it is huge fistfuls of tissue , or stuff that should not be in there , you have a brisk talk with the toiletees of that house . If it is a water flow problem , too little or too much water to leach away, you address that too.

7. Time to head to Florida? with storm after storm hitting the Yankees , this may be a time to head to Sarasota to take in some Sunshine , and above 50 degrees , too. According to information we have received lately ,. houses within a half mile of Pine-craft can be bought for well below 50% of the price just a few years ago . And as for us ? our weather here in SC  is within 10 degrees of Florida weather most days , so why bother ?

6. What will happen in Eygpt ? That is a good question . They are a modern enough Country that it is hard to believe they will slip into militant Muslim . Niether are they suited for democracy , any more then Iraq is or was.(In spite of what former pres. Bush Thought ).  Feb 01-11

5.One of the anomalies , of this time and place lately is we notice it is rather common to see young-married “plain”,Mennonite couples sitting together in our local Mennonite Churches, or at Church doings, and It has been rather embarrassing lately to note that several of the couples have been what we would call “Making out ” in Church . We are haplessly observing what looks like serious physical groping and fondling  here, Where one seat is enough room for 2 people . In public ,and  in a Plain Church service,or Church event.

As a father of several teenage girls , I have assured them that is not only wrong ,Shows a lack of discretion ,  it almost surely shows there are very serious problems in the relationships like that .

Ah well , maybe the affected Churches need to go back to separated seating , like it used to be . Jan 30-11

Update Jan 31-11 .Wow , what a lot of hits on this little itty bitty item . And why , am I asked , do you not do the Scriptural and right thing and speak to these couples about this ? The answer we have at this point is we will warn our own family ,and leave it up to each family . And besides , the hardest folks in the world to try and talk to has got to be someone who appears to have lost their “Shamer.” (An Amish phrase for one who has no apparent  sense of Shame left).

4. We attended the evening session at Wp mennonite in Due West SC on Mon evening. The local And regional Mennonite Pastors are having a week long gathering , with the evenings open to lowly “Laypersons”. We enjoyed it , with Steve Bieler expounding on the “Sermon on the Mount”. Walter Beachy taught on “Anabaptist history”. Like any and all gatherings of this sort , The less a speaker talks about himself , and his own experiences, the more he says worth hearing or remembering . We plan on attending again ..Jan 26-11.

update . We only managed to get in one more night . it was a small crowd Wed. night . Steve Bieler admitted he was tired and cut it short .Walter spiriled off into mostly stories about his mission work, and not a whole lot about Anabaptist . But they were both worthwhile to listen to .

2. The C.A.M. Sharing plan in Ind. has had a major shake-up at their headquarters .

In the balance , they ,with their approach to loss sharing ,are still better and more scriptural then any secular Insurance companies we know of. That may not be saying a lot , as most Insurance companies are ungodly , but we still have to use them .

The main administrator there , seems to have went to pieces Spiritually , and was quickly relieved of his job there . He was a nice guy , and we hope he finds his way . May we suggest that certain aspects of the plan he was so strongly touting all these years may have contributed to his confusion now . Some of their “Sharing , Caring ”  guidelines are , in our opinion ,totally contrary to Biblical Principles. Calling Selfishness a godly virtue will get one mixed up at some point .

Perhaps it is only because of the Honesty of the vast majority of their enrollees  that they have done the good job they have all these years . As we mentioned earlier , they are more scriptural then secular Insurance companies.

1. Well , our New year has got off to a snowy start . The second snow of the season has left snow on the ground for a week  week , now. It started with 7 inches , it is down to ice now . With the snow laying on the ground so long , one can”t drive just anywhere with a vehicle . You see , you can get stuck in your own lawn . That is unusual in itself , we are so used to driving about anywhere , a day after it rains  .
